ARC Review: Wildefire by Karsten Knight

Title: Wildefire
Author: Karsten Knight
Release Date: July 26th 2011
Source: ARC
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Kindle Lendable: No

Goodreads Description:

Every flame begins with a spark.

Ashline Wilde is having a rough sophomore year. She’s struggling to find her place as the only Polynesian girl in school, her boyfriend just cheated on her, and now her runaway sister, Eve, has decided to barge back into her life. When Eve’s violent behavior escalates and she does the unthinkable, Ash transfers to a remote private school nestled in California’s redwoods, hoping to put the tragedy behind her. But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own. With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time… And when warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.

My Thoughts:

I have been eagerly anticipating Wildefire for awhile now and when I was given the chance to read the ARC, I greedily grabbed at the chance.  I came into Wildefire with high expectations, not only because of the synopsis, but because the author, Karsten Knight, and his personality.  I was hoping that his personality would reflect into his story telling ability.

I was drawn in from the first page of Ash's story and am still left wanting more, even though I'm finished.

The story is original and well written.  Karsten was able to write the scenes so descriptively that I was able to picture the scenes in my mind as if I was actually there.  His personality really shines through to his characters' personalities.  Ash and her friends had me laughing, cringing, and even tearing up and covering my mouth as it was open in an "Oh no! How could that happen?" kind of moment.

My favorite part was the ending.  I never saw it coming and it blew me away after I went back to the pages to see who that character was again.  I don't want to give anything away, but just make sure that you pay attention to all the characters named that way you don't have to go searching at the end saying "Wait, who was that again?" just like I did.

At first, I just thought that Eve, Ash's sister, was a character who was just misunderstood and was only trying to be there for Ash when she was needed.  That just maybe things got a bit out of hand in the beginning, but while continuing their story, I realized she is just a cruel, psychotic girl who obviously needs to be dealt with properly before anyone else gets hurt.

The whole idea of Polynesian Gods and Goddesses is what drew me to continue reading.  It's a topic that I've never encountered before when choosing a book, so I wasn't positive whether I would enjoy it as much as I hoped to and if I would start reading and get lost in the adventures the characters were being put through.  Wildefire surpassed my expectations and now I will be eagerly awaiting the sequel, along with everyone else, I'm sure.  How can we not, with a cliffhanger like that?

I love when a story also contains romance.  Ash and Colt's romance isn't the "love at first sight" type of romance.  It feels a bit more real since they take their time getting to know each other and becoming friends first, then continue into a light romance.

So overall, I really enjoyed Wildefire.  It did have a bit of cussing and violence that might be inappropriate for the younger generation of teens, but as a whole, it's an adventure suitable for anyone mid teens and older.  I would have appreciated a  little more romance throughout the book since there wasn't as much as I like, but was still fulfilled with the remainder of the story and wasn't really even considering the lack of romance due to the other events that were going on.  The humorous banter between Ash and her friends had me laughing out loud.  The creatures that Karsten created had me cringing in fear for Ash and her friends, especially when we are first introduced to the Cloak.

Wildefire was a breath of fresh air  and was pure awesomeness that will leave you begging for more.  So if you are ready for a refreshing change instead of the paranormal that you usually read, pick this up because it is a fantastic read full of twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat till the end.  With Karsten's unique storyline and cast of characters,  I guarantee that you'll love it too! Karsten is a hot new author to watch out for and I will definitely be reading more of his work as it becomes available.

The Duck Tape Diva Review

I had the amazing pleasure of working with Kathy aka The Duck Tape Diva! I have never seen anything like Kathy's work before. She makes completely original pieces out of colorful duck tape! Yes you read right ... out of duck tape. Kathy asked me what I would like to review from her shop and I had her surprise me with something great and great it is.

Kathy sent me a 3 piece set entitles Chat Noir. A beautiful set that is yellow and orange and has a beautifully crafted and detailed cat on it. It also is sporting the words Chat Nior.

As you can see from the photo above. The set included 3 matching items. A purse, a cosmetic case and a business card case in which has my initial on it. (Please excuse the glare.)
The purse was much bigger than I had anticipated. I assumed being made out of duck tape, it would need to be small in order to be structurally sound. Man was I wrong! This is a large purse that has tons of room in it. I have large expectations for my purses because I have so much to carry around. At first sight I was thinking, "I am never going to get everything into the purse." But you know me... I love to push the boundaries of anything I review, but I didn't push this purses boundaries... I still had room for more!
These are the items that I needed to fit in my purse.
*10.1 inch Netbook ... In Sleeve
*Wallet
*New Trent (Polka dot case)
*Kindle 3 w/ Case
*Keys
*Lip Balm
*Eye Podz (tanning goggles)
*Body Spray
*Lotion
*USB Cord
*Cell Phone
*Matching Cosmetic Case (Full of make up)
*Matching Card Case (Full Of Business Cards)
and last but not least
*Rockstar ... You know for when I get drowsy.

Here is how everything fit!
And Everything Fit and it still zipped!

This purse is incredibly structurally sound. With everything in it, it held everything so well that when I placed the strap on my shoulder it felt as though hardly anything had been added to the purse. Now that's what I call quality. I had never seen anything made out of duck tape like this before. I have seen wallets before, but never a purse especially one that zippers! You aren't going to loose your items out of this baby. This is one of the most kick ass purses I have ever had the honor of carrying! I will definitely be purchasing one when I need a change of purse!

Kathy clearly named her shop correctly, because she truly is The Duck Tape Diva!

Die For Me Review

Title: Die for Me (Revenants)

Author: Amy Plum

Release Date: May 10, 2011

Publisher: HarperTEEN
Source: Bought/Audiobook/Itunes

Description:
In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

In this incandescent debut, newcomer Amy Plum has created a powerful paranormal mythology with immortal revenants. The Paris setting comes enchantingly alive as a relentless struggle between good and evil takes place in its streets. Rich with , atmosphere, and thrills, Die for Me will leave readers breathlessly awaiting its sequel.

Kate's parents have died and she has come from the U.S. to live in France with her grandparents and her sister Georgia. She has become a bit of a hermit, never venturing out of her grandparents house. One day her sister tells her she should at least go to a cafe to read, at least then she will be surrounded by people instead of being all alone all day.

Kate wants to find the perfect cafe... a cafe that she can call hers. After visiting one cafe she finds nothing but old people...Kate quickly moves on to the next. Upon entering the cafe she automatically feels at home! This will be Kate's cafe where she will spend her days reading. Its not long before Kate locks eyes with a gorgeous mysterious stranger. Vincent. After a couple days of seeing each other at the cafe, one wall crumbles and would have landed on Kate if someone hadn't requested that she go to their table the exact second that the wall let go.

The people that called Kate over know Vincent and are like him. Revenant. A person who saves humans but must die every few years in order to keep doing so. While they are dead they float around in a ghost like state, not visible or audible to humans but they can easily communicate with each other.

I have left a lot out of my description of the book, mainly because I don't want to give too much away and I feel that if I was to go into a lot of detail I wouldn't be able to stop. I am in love with this book. I got the audiobook from iTunes and it was totally worth it.

The Narrator of the book brings Die For Me alive. You can fully believe that she is Kate. She is at times hopeless, snarky, starstruck, and loveable.... everything that Kate is. She is also great at narrating the other voices in the book. Normally I am a little weirded out by a woman doing a mans vocals in an audiobook. Mainly because it doesn't at all sound manly... it sounds creepy! She was truly amazing! Her voice fit Kate to a T and the voices she made for the males weren't at all creepy or weird. You can tell that the narrator was very carefully chosen for this book.
