Unearthly Review

Title: Unearthly
Author: Cynthia Hand
Release Date: Jan 1, 2011
Publisher: HarperTeen
Source: Audible/Publisher ARC

Description:

In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Clara is one quarter angel. That tiny little quarter has begun to determine her life. While living in California with her mom, Clara has a vision of her purpose. She sees a wildfire that is taking over the forrest, in the midst of the fire she sees a boy, and a silver avalanche (as in the truck). On that Avalanche she sees something that is going to change the course of her future and purpose... a Wyoming license plate.

Clara, her mother and brother move to Wyoming in hopes of finding the boy, and carrying out what she was meant to do.... save the boy... or so she thinks. On her first day of school she sees the boy from her vision and the overwhelming feelings she feels when she sees him makes her pass out... what a way to start her life here. The boy, who happens to be Christian Prescott, all around cutie and part of the popular crowd, carries Clara to the nurses office.

After that one chance encounter with him, Clara throws herself into learning everything about him and taking every opportunity possible to get close to him. There is only one issue, just as she starts becoming close to Christian, he leaves for the summer. What is she going to do with her summer now? Enter Tucker.

Tucker and Clara are always going head to head with witty insults and banter, as Clara begins spending more time with Tucker over the summer she starts to fall for him. The issue is that Clara is meant for much more than a relationship with Tucker, she is supposed to devote her time to Christian and learning how to master her Angel skills so that she can save him.

Will Clara and Tucker be able to overcome Clara's destiny or is Clara meant to be with someone else?

Unearthly was strangely addicting. I have been putting off reading this book for a while because I didn't overly like the sounds of the plot. It reminded me of every other angel book. Angel meets hot guy, hot guy is amazing blah blah blah. It so didn't turn out that way at all. I found myself, even from the beginning routing for Tucker to get with Clara. I loved their constant banter back and forth, yet he is always the one to come to her aid when she needs anyone.

Most of the book I really disliked Christian's character, he was cocky and I found him a bit rude. I mean come on he leaves Clara at the prom and takes home another girl.... huge yuck factor!

This book is left off on a major cliff hanger... way to make me want more.

Overall though I enjoyed the book, and I will be picking up the sequel whenever it comes out... because I can't wait to see what happens between Tucker, Clara and Christian.

  1. I liked Unearthly, too. Didn't expect to like it as much. The cliffhanger is a good one.
