Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop

Christina who blogs at All About YA Books asks...

"If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series, do you always start with the first title?"

If I find a book that I think that I might be interested in but it turns out its the second or third (ect) in a series, I do find that I have to read the first book in the series first. Especially if I am interested in a book that's farther in the series, because I don't want to jump ahead to that book and not enjoy it as much, seeing I am completely lost because I don't know what happened in the other books. Even when requested to read a book that is part of a series by a publisher, before agreeing, I first ask if they can send me the rest of the series with it, if I have yet to read it. They are usually very accommodating.

  1. Hi, Mary! Old follower here. :) I also read the first book first if it's a series. I find it confusing if I don't..

    Have a nice weekend!

  2. One of my favorite series, Protector of the Small by tamora Pierce, I started reading at the third of four books. I didn't know at the time that it was part of a series, so I started the whole thing from book 1. I've now reread it about a million times and book 3 is still my favorite of the series. I think if I had started it from B1 I wouldn't have enjoyed the series over all as much as I did because B3 was definitely the most exciting.
However! I do try to start a series from the start. Although yesterday, my sister left The Dark Road to Darjeeling, book 4, on the kitchen table and I picked it up and started reading. I got to the second chapter and liked it a lot. I plan on reading it from book 1 now and don't mind in the least that some of the plot has been spoiled.
In conclusion: I do like starting from the beginning, but it's not like this huge issue for me. If a book sounds good, or is left unattended, I'll read it.

  3. Hi, hon - already a follower, but sharing the Friday love anyway. :)

I totally agree on the series approach. While I've dived in mid-series a few times for review purposes, it's always awkward. Without knowing what went before, you're constantly wondering whether a scene should be more significant, if a seemingly weak character is actually very well-established, etc.

  4. Old follower...I have to start with book one as well. Why be confused and try to play catch up? Hope you come by and see my answer!

  7. I can dive right into the middle of a book series if the series' story
    doesn't run chronologically.

That is to say, if each novel in a series is a stand-alone story (like Lee
Child's Reacher novels) then I don't feel the need to start with book one.

On the other hand, a series of books (like Richard Hatch's Battlestar
Galactica novels) can't be read out of sequence since each new book builds
upon the story of the previous entry in the series.

    Happy Book Blogger Hop Friday!

  10. Hopping through. I can't imagine starting a series with anything other than the first unless it was an accident or I absolutely couldn't get the first.

Just hopping through! I've been a follower for a bit. I don't mind starting a series in the second or third book but I also go back and read the first as well.
